What was something you had hoped for that did not materialize the way you had expected?

When I was younger in the 70s, I had a lot of hope that the world would finally be peaceful and there would be an end to wars. Now, I'm beginning to think that things are getting worse. I thought people were becoming smarter and more loving, but when I look at all the wars and the suffering they bring, I wonder why things are the way they are.
